I swear, nothing pisses me off more than my grandmother telling me I like to spend money when it comes to fixing up this house. That just made me beyond angry. In the 30 years or so that they have owned the duplex I currently live in, they’ve barely done a darn thing home improvement wise to maintain it. They may have a good chunk of change in the bank but they are the cheapest people around. And don’t me wrong, I am all about spending wisely (Hello I LOVE the Dollar store!), but when it comes to stuff that needs to be done because it’s part of owning property, it’s a whole different story.
My grandparents came over today so I could discuss carpet prices and such with them. I was worried they wouldn’t front the money for it because Mormor was against wall-to-wall carpeting in the first place due to some screwed up belief/superstition that it would trap evil spirits.
But Morfar gave me a check so one less thing to worry about. Someone from Home Depot is coming out to take measurements on Saturday, Tuesday we’ll get a quote and Wednesday we pay and order. Then 3 weeks from then, we’ll have carpet.
I also had a guy come over to see about installing an fume hood in our kitchen since I currently don’t have one. The stove that was here when we first moved in was a 50 year old one that had the vent built in so there was this big pipe that went to the back and into the wall. But once we got a new stove, there was no place for the fumes to go except in my kitchen causing me headaches whenever I cooked. The guy told us (my grandparents arranged this btw) it’d be about 2 weeks since he’s in the middle of another project. While I’m waiting for him, I can start on wall/cabinet painting and cabinet replacing. Flooring will be very last.
Anyhoo, I need to get going and head over to IKEA to return the remainder of the flooring we didn’t use. That’ll be a nice $25 back in my pocket which I can possibly put towards other household things. W00t!

ooookay then, as of when does carpeting have anything to do with evil spirits!? (heheh, that emoticon made my life, btw!) That’s just bizarre! I don’t think you can even HAVE an evil spirit, let along one that might want to hide in your carpet?!
Anyway, your grandparent’s attitude sounds like a real pain. I absolutely agree with you, it doesn’t sound like you’re doing anything that doesn’t NEED to be done, and with those kind of things you may as well spend the money once to have it done well, rather than pay for a cheap job, or leave it alone completely, and then have to deal with more problems in the future!
Doesn’t fixing up your own place feel nice. I love my apartment.
Oh that’s interesting what you call your grandparents! Danish words! Actually, very cool coincidence…when my mother’s parents were alive I called them Opa and Oma…German! :D
But lol, evil spirits! XD Goodness. :P And $25 yeah, wooot! :D
[...] forgot to mention in my last post that not only do I like to spend money, but I am also inventing damages amongst my home. Yup, [...]
