I don't know exactly how you've cleaned the tank in the past and how Joshua cleaned it on his own this last time but I had a couple suggestions to help you keep any new fish happy and healthy. When cleaning a tank you should never COMPLETELY clean it out because the fish need the helpful bacteria that is in their water. If you have a biowheel filter you can clean out almost all the water and clean most the gravel as long as you leave the biowheel dirty. If you don't have a biowheel you should leave a small amount of water or not completely clean out the gravel. Also, hard water can kill fish, so if you have hard water where you live you should use filtered water. You might want to get one of those water chemical testing kits or bring a sample of the water you put in the tank to your local pet store, most pet stores test water for free.
