*yawn* What a day. I was up at 3:45am so I could be ready in time for a 5am-9am shift. They tried to get me to stay longer, hah. As if! I originally asked for the day off, which they forgot to give me so I compromised, PLUS I had to be in Alameda by 11:30am for my orthodontist appointment. I’ve been holding back about the frustrations I’ve been having at work this past month, but since it’s clear that I am not going to be a supervisor, I don’t mind saying what I have to say here.
Basically, I feel like I was screwed over. At my old store the people that got promoted to temporary keyholder were trained to be supervisor AND were given a set of keys; keys they got to take home and use to open and close the store. Not keys that are kept in the safe and used only when needed aka to close drawers. HENCE the KEYHOLDER part of the temporary keyholder title. I did not get my own set of keys. Nor did I go through any additional training. In fact they hired another associate who is the same age as me AND has only been with the company for several months whereas I have been with the company for almost TWO YEARS! Don’t get me wrong, I love this girl dearly, and have actually vented my frustration about how I am being treated to her. But the fact that they trained someone else and had two supervisors from different stores “help us out” when I was perfectly capable of doing so hurt.
I can count how many times I got to “watch the board” on one hand. At most it was an hour long and it was usually while management would go on a break or have a “official supervisors only” meeting. I never got to open or close the store like the other temporary keyholders did. Nothing was different about my position because at my old store my boss would have me watch the board all the time while she did schedules. And the one thing that gets to me more than anything was the fact they had asked the other cash handler (whose only been with us since September) if he wanted to be a temporary keyholder A WEEK BEFORE THEY ASKED ME, and despite him declining the position they still made him watch the board, even when I was perfectly capable and available of watching the board.
When they came to me with their “offer” I had two weeks of school left, which included finals. They wanted me to start “temporary keyholding” during the week of finals which I made myself as available as possible and sacrificed sleep and crucial study time for NOTHING. I didn’t get to watch the board or do anything related to my “new position” during those extra hours I made myself available. The second my final was over I opened my availability up to Monday through Saturday open to close. That availability ends as of this week, and like I said earlier I can count on my hand the number of times I got to watch the board.
I understand that if the reason why they didn’t train me was due to the stress of the holiday season, but I can’t help but compare their treating of their temporary keyholders to the treatment of the temporary keyholders at my old store. It’s all Old Navy so why should it be different?
So after dealing with this BS for the past month, I’ve decided I don’t care. I know I work my butt off there and am more than worthy of being a supervisor, but why should I go out on a limb for the people who don’t follow through with what they offer to me? It’s why I’ve lowered my availability to two days a week. Besides I need the hours for studying and there is NO WAY I am going to fail a class because of work.
You’re probably wondering by now why don’t I just quit? The thing is, I like working for Old Navy otherwise I wouldn’t be there for as long as I have. I like the company and its values. The management’s way of handling things at this particular store is what makes moving up in the career/status ladder frustrating. So I’m done. I just consider myself a regular associate, no one special, just doing her job to earn some money.

I’ve never worked at Old Navy, nor in retail at all, so I don’t really know what’s going on, but it certainly sounds pretty crap! :/
3.45am o__O
Flipping heck.
No way could I ever do that.
