Can someone please explain to me why people think it’s okay to use a credit/debit card that doesn’t have their name on it? Everytime I’m working register at work, I always ask to see ID whenever the card is ran as credit. When the names don’t match and I ask them to use a card with their name on it, they wig out. Most of the time it’s a husband/wife trying to use their spouses card. Listen, if you share the same bank account, the bank gives you a card with each of your names on it. If it’s a credit card, whoever the main account holder is can add an authorized user so that you also get your own card with you name on it linked to the same account.
What people fail to realize is I don’t know them. Sure you say, “Oh it’s my husband’s/wife’s/dad’s/mom’s card!” How do I know that you didn’t just take it? How do I know you’re not going through a messy divorce and trying to rack up bad credit on someone? How do I know it’s even yours to begin with? I don’t because IT DOES NOT HAVE YOUR NAME ON IT!
Yesterday I had a lady come through my line wanting to use what apparently was her husband’s credit card. I asked to see her ID and the card, and she hands it to me like there is no problem. Seriously I don’t get how people have this mentality when identity theft is such a big common crime nowadays. Anyway, I ask her to use a card that has her on it, and rudely she states she’ll just use her debit card. After the transaction was complete she laughs and says as she walks out, “That was my husband’s ATM card too!” Gah, what the heck people?
With identity being such a big thing, how is this okay? Why are people okay with this?

People are just plain stupid. They dont take the time to understand they why. They just fast forward to the reaction which isw in most cases freaking out.
i encounter the same thing at my work. when someone calls in and wants to change their number, or rate plan, or get personal info or numbers they’ve calls and they can’t verify the last four ssn or password and i deny them, they FLIPPPP OUT. they’re exactly the same response as your cst’s. they’re like.. it’s my mom’s acct, i’m her daughter!, or it’s under my husbands name but i pay all the bills.. etc etc. and i’m like, i don’t care.. i don;t know you. this could be a lost phone and you got the name from the adress book. i’m not doing jack w/o vid’ing it. and they even escalate to my manager over this sometimes… oops.
sorry to rant Cristina ~_~ i just very much agree and empathize w/ you.
Yeah, it’s pretty lame. It reminds me of my horror at what some people write about themselves on the web. I mean don’t they know how easy it is for some crazy freak to find them?? Bah.
I admit I am surprised how often most cashiers don’t ask for my ID at all. You know even though most companies will state you should always ask for ID during training, they end up not caring to do it. Kohl’s even has a screen that comes up after a customer swipes a card to tell the cashier to ask for ID but most just press the button to bypass it.
But overall, it’s really the customer’s fault if they’re going to fling around their personal information and credit/debit cards like the world is NOT full of thousands of criminals out to steal their money and identification. Everyone should buy paper shredders and pay for things in cash… XD … in a perfect world, right?
The other day, I was just a bit lazy and didn’t want to go in to pay for my friend’s drink while I pumped gas. So I almost let her take my card in and sign it big and clearly with her name instead of mine. lol! That was my credit card people could say, HEY! This isn’t your signature, and I’d just tell them it’s okay.
But then I got off my lazy bum and went in with her.
I don’t work in a store and I don’t have a credit card, so I’ve never had this problem, but I can see how it would annoy you, if you had to keep telling people no all the time, because they’re too stupid to catch on of their own accord!
