Not Sure
Written on Monday, May 12th, 2008 @ 1:51pm

Over the weekend my grandma somewhat offered me a job. She’d pay me $25 an hour do housecleaning, yardwork etc. and it’d all be under the table. She basically said I can come over whenever to help her whether it be on weekends or whatever; hours would be VERY flexible. Plus I’d get good exercise, heh heh. Considering I have quite a bit going on during the summer, especially with summer school, it works out really nice. Not to mention it’d be great to take a break from retail after working it for 3 years straight.

Well, a little over a month ago I applied online to possibly get a job at Bare Escentuals. A week later I went in the store to hand in my resume since I hadn’t heard from anybody. Now, two weeks after that I get a call asking for an interview. I called back and scheduled one for this Thursday. And now there’s a big part of me that is not sure if I really want this job if I get it. Honestly I was not impressed having to wait so long, and it would look really unprofessional if I had to request days off right away.

I need help. I don’t know what to choose, but I’m really leaning towards helping my grandma, especially since she does need it. What happens if they offer me the job at BE? How would I professionally turn it down? Should I cancel the interview? What would I say?

worried Help!!

Congrats on both job offers! ^_^ If it were me, I’d weigh the potential earnings from both jobs: hours x wage = money and pick the one that pays the most. It may work out that for the same amount of time you could make twice as much working for your grandmother.

I don’t suggest you cancel the interview, because there is a chance you could get hired. And a corporate paid job looks sooo much better on a resume than yard work for a relative.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

Ah, that is a bit of a hard situation. I would definitely go with my Grandma if it was me. I mean, are you gonna get paid that much at the BE place? Plus, at your Grandma’s house, it will be way more flexible, and you will be doing all sorts of different things. Who knows, she might even make you lunch or bake you cookies or something because you are working so hard. I mean it’s great that you have an interview at BE, but they made you wait too long in my opinion. They can’t expect you to hang around waiting for them to make up their mind. You have a life and you need to make money!

Man, I’m not sure how I’d handle this, but I probably wouldn’t cancel the interview. Even if they have given you the run around with your application, I’d still go to it anyway, see how much you’re likely to be paid, and then weigh up which you’d rather do.
If you do end up turning down the BE job, I’m sure they’d accept it, if you thanked them for their time, but were honest and said you’d also been offered another job which is more suitable and appealing. :)

I probably wouldn’t cancel either. I mean, the interview might go really well and you might get really excited about it and find out that it would be a really good place to work. If the interview goes well, and then end up calling you and offering you the job, you could always turn it down like Holly said. It’s something to think about anyway. :)

Well, the thing I learned about applying online (or at all — online is just 21st century savvy) is that rarely, if you apply online, does a job contact you: employers want to see you come back in again and again to show them that you WANT the job, not that you’ll just take whatever. So I was getting very frustrated when I applied online to tons of places and didn’t hear anything back — it wasn’t until I called back Hollywood Video that I found out that (a) calling after applying is a good sign that you’re eager to work for them and (b) half the time, employers don’t even pull their online apps until an applicant or a higher-up prompts them to. With the case of BE, you turning in your resume most likely proved that you were eager to work for them, as well as prompting them to check online for your app. 2 weeks later, voila, job interview!

As for the decision between grandma’s and BE…I would personally choose BE. I mean, for one thing, it DOES look better on a future resume and is a possible gateway job into a career (I think you mentioned something like that for a career?). But, if your grandmother does need the help, then I would go to the interview, really shine, and then ask if there is any way that you could start after a certain period later on…or if they could consider you in a few months (but that means you have to REALLY shine during the interview to make them want to call you back in a few months instead of just hiring someone else). So, that’s my take.

Hope it helped!

I need to have better timing on commenting on your entries so my advice will actually APPLY to you. XD

$25 an hour is a nice chunk o’ money…but what the others suggested does ring true. Looks better on a resume, experience, career, etc. Since they’ve all mentioned the best reasons, I will just give my nod. :)
