I was reading Dooce’s blog entry about the RNC and reading through the comments I found one person who put my exact feelings about this whole thing into her comment.
[Obama] has a real talent. But when it comes to his signature, I need more than talent. I understand that you (Obama supporters) probably feel the same way about McCain and that is your choice. Isn’t that what it’s all about? The right to choose? All I am asking is that you give me, an educated voter, the respect that you demand for yourself. And if I disagree with your opinion, I ask that you learn from me, just as I will try to learn from you.
I understand that some people don’t agree with me. Lord knows there are plenty of people I disagree with, but I don’t sit there and insult their education or ability to decide for themselves. If you want to vote Obama, please by all means VOTE! But is it really necessary to elevate your party to a level of superiority that can only be understood by those you agree with? Surely we can do better than that.
Throughout this whole thing I feel like if I show the slightest bit that I am a McCain-Palin supporter that people are gonna come after me with pitchforks. Not to mention that one of my Facebook friends said, “I can’t believe that any educated American would ever want Sarah Palin in the White House.” So because I am actually one of those people that actually likes Palin that makes me an uneducated American? That’s not fair. Just because I have different beliefs doesn’t make me stupid or evil. And may I just say that while I don’t agree with everything McCain-Palin believe in, I agree with them more than I do Obama. So, give me a break, and let’s quit the name-calling.

I never make a solid decision until I walk into the voting booth. So far, I have misgivings about both. But then I haven’t seen a candidate that I have liked since Lincoln, lol.
Though I do think that people foget sometimes that though a candidate may promise things, he/she can not do a thing unless Congress agrees with them.
I’ll admit that I find it hard to understand why someone would vote McCain/Palin this year, but I am trying to learn from those people rather than being a jerk. I don’t always succeed (because like I said, I have a hard time understanding it) but I would like to be respectful even if I don’t get it.
I’ll go on record as saying that I find McCain and Palin terrifying in terms of what they want to implement. For instance, how SP is against teaching sex-ed in schools (preferring the abstinence-only route which has not proven to be successful) meanwhile her own daughter ends up pregnant - I know people say that’s off-limits to talk about, but I think it’s relevant because of SP’s championing of abstinence. Like, if it works so well, how come your own daughter didn’t manage to get it?
Personally, after the last eight years, I want a president I can be proud of - someone who makes me happy, not ashamed, to be an American. Someone who can speak eloquently and strongly about his beliefs and won’t have a knee-jerk reaction to tough situations (fight! kill!) but will consider them thoughtfully and choose the best course of action.
Side note: Watching Obama’s speech at the convention (I watched it later, online - no TV) I totally teared up when he was talking about his wife and kids, and thanked Michelle - the way he grinned after she smiled at him was so totally heartwarming and genuine. You can tell he is totally in love with his wife and I find that incredibly endearing. Conversely, it pains me to think that McCain is okay with calling his wife the “c-word” in public.
Hope I’m not being offensive. I am super interested in the election this year and I tend to have very strong feelings about it.
@Meggan: As I said to you on Plurk, I admire how civil you’re being despite you and I being opposite in regards to who we want for prez. I wish there were more people like you because it’s the people who are being nasty with the name-calling that is such a turn off when discussing politics. I don’t like being called stupid just because I am not an Obama supporter.
And like I said before, I don’t agree with everything Palin and McCain believe in. I used to be pro-life, but I have become pro-choice and would choose to keep my baby. If that baby turned out to be homosexual, I’d still fight for its rights.
Bottom line, one person is going to win and both sides will have to deal.
I thought I was the only McCain supporter on the internet :P
I’ve decided not to talk about it on the web anymore. I cried the other night after a discussion. There you go Dems… you got what you want. You silenced me. Please continue with your hate-mongering and intolerance. Thanks for pretending to be the party that practiced peace and understanding :P
If you ever want to talk politics, let me know
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
