iphone

Okay, I am having a very hard time figuring out exactly how much it would cost me to upgrade from my 8GB iPhone 3G to the new 32GB iPhone 3GS. I’m finding conflicting information all over the place!

This is what the fine print reads on Apple’s web site:

For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB).

Now, here is what apparently AT&T and all the other tech blogs are reporting:

AT&T has announced that the upgrade prices for iPhone 3GS will be $399 (16GB) or $499 (32GB) for customers who are still under contract after purchasing the prior-generation iPhone 3G.

So, which is it?

Here is my situation. In 2007 I went on my own 2 year contract for the very first time, as in it was under my name as opposed to being my plan under my mom’s name. August 2008 I extend my 2 year contract by upgrading from my Motorola Razr to an iPhone 3G. Ideally I’d like to do the same thing by upgrading to the newest iPhone. The question I have is it going to be $499 or $699?

I log in to my AT&T account, check my upgrade eligibility and it says, “You can take advantage of our no commitment pricing at a participating retail sales location. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 01/23/2010.” I went to the BuyiPhone.apple.com web site, went through all the motions and was told the same thing plus listing the price for a 8GB/16GB/32GB is $499/$599/$699.

Whether it’s $499 or $699, I can’t afford it either way. Some people are saying it’s cheaper to cancel and start a new contract, which wouldn’t be so bad for me because my cell phone number is with my old area code. New area, new number, new phone, new contract? *shrugs*

Honestly, the features with the new 3.0 software sound more exciting than the iPhone 3GS features.

[Edit] Someone mentioned there is a 3 month waiting period if you cancel your AT&T contract and sign up for a new one. Anyone know if this is true or not?

The expensive pricing is what you’ll pay if you have no 2yr upgrade available. I only got the iPhone since I was able to get the $199 upgrade price last year.

I’m getting a Macbook Pro anyway so I’m not that interested in the 3Gs.

Hmm, the way I read it, I think that it will be 499 for you to get the new phone. I would go with AT&T rather than apple…because in essence, you will be getting it from AT&T in the end, right? But yes, it is really super expensive. I didn’t even know a new iphone is out. I will have to go and find out what more and exciting things they have added :s
